Tummy Time

Tummy Time is a neuro-rich activity necessary for optimizing development, health, comfort, and well-being of baby. It is also a beautiful way for baby and parents to connect, as it is an activity that is done together with baby, not an activity that the baby does on his/her own. Through engaging in Tummy Time with baby, parents learn how to attune to their baby’s needs and emotions, fostering growth of self-regulation. Tummy Time is a safe activity done with supervision, on a blanket on the floor, to develop posture, health, and movement.

With the Back to Sleep culture, increased use of carriers, strollers, and containers, it is especially important for a baby to counter the time spent weight bearing on the back of the body by bearing weight on the front of the body for optimal neural development. The challenge can be that some babies might have a hard time in tummy time or express discomfort. This does not mean that a baby does not like tummy time. Every baby deserves to be comfortable in every position, and it is our job to attune to those needs of the baby and assist in this process.

I use a renown and progressive scientific program to facilitate tummy time called The TummyTime! Method. This program addresses individual needs of each newborn to precrawling infant by educating parents and providing supportive environments that make tummy time an enjoyable activity. Accommodations and tips are provided to ensure that every baby can be comfortable in tummy time. My intention is for parents to feel comfortable with Tummy Time, to feel empowered harmonizing with their baby, and to feel knowledgeable of the importance and benefits of Tummy Time on current and later development for their child.

I offer both prenatal classes for parents and caregivers to ensure comfort with Tummy Time before baby arrives, as well as small group classes for baby and parent/caregiver. Classes are held in office/studio locations in Boulder. Please contact me for more information if you are interested in attending or hosting a class at lotusoty@gmail.com.

Current Classes: Tuesdays 12:00-12:45 (prenatal) and 1:00-2:00 (parents with baby) in North Boulder. Drop-in and series rates available.
